FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Grand Canyon sophomore thrower
Jorden Okyere continued his streak of broken records at the NAU Tune Up meet on Friday. This is the third week in a row that he has set a GCU indoor record in shot put.
"Once again,
Jorden Okyere broke his own school record in the shot put, and it was nice to see
Bryson Benjamin, who had battled all fall with a terrible ankle injury, perform well in the 400-meter," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said.
Okyere threw a mark of 17.43 meters, which broke his previous record of 17 meters at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational last week in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
"I also thought that
Lily Standley in the pole vault and
Damion Marshall in both the 60 meters and 200 meters had outstanding performances," Flood said.
GCU sophomore multi-athlete Raeann Queener placed first in women's high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters, and sophomore thrower
Samaria McDonald placed second in women's weight throw with a toss of 15.75 meters.
"We will finalize the always tough decisions on who makes our conference teams this weekend, and again we have positioned ourselves to be in the hunt for a couple of WAC indoor team titles," Flood said.
GCU will compete in the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday in Nampa, Idaho. The Lopes look to become the second program to win five consecutive WAC indoor titles in men's and women's team competitions simultaneously. BYU was the first to five-peat in both from 1995 to 1999.
