Trey Johnson was named WAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week for Jan. 13-19 after winning the long jump competition at the Lumberjack Team Challenge.
The sophomore from Tolleson, Arizona, competes as a jumper, hurdler and sprinter for the Lopes. On Friday in Flagstaff, Arizona, Johnson hit a mark of 7.73 meters to take first place among competitors from seven teams. That mark is 3 centimeters short of his school record, but it is enough to lead the WAC, as well as hit the automatic qualifying mark for the USA Indoor National meet. Johnson's mark ranks sixth nationally this season.
During the meet, Johnson also competed in the 60-meter hurdles. He finished in 7.97 seconds, which is the third-fastest time in GCU history, leads the WAC and is an automatic qualifying mark for the USA Indoor National meet.
Junior sprinter

The Lopes travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational on Friday.
