The Grand Canyon swimming and diving program announced its schedule for the 2019-20 season, following a season in which the men's team won the WAC Championships, posted a top-35 finish at the NCAA Championships and took fourth at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship while the women's team finished seventh in the WAC.
"Our schedule this year is a bit more compact, giving us a few more weekends we can focus on training instead of traveling," GCU head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "But it still has a good variety of competition that will prepare us both for WAC and postseason competition, as well as for the various Olympic qualifying meets as we enter the Olympic year."
The Lopes will open their season in Miami on the weekend of Oct. 4 for the Florida International TYR Fall Classic. The Lopes will then compete at Seattle U with the women also swimming against Loyola Marymount on Oct. 18-19.
"We open the season with the FIU TYR Fall Classic again this year," Schaffer said. "The meet limits the roster size each team can take, so our kids have to compete for the nine swimmer and two diver spots if they want to make the trip. It will have a stronger group of teams participating this year with LSU, Pitt, TCU, Army, George Washington, Old Dominion and Florida International. It will be a good test for our top kids."
GCU will make its home debut Nov. 8-9 and will host Air Force and Idaho. The men's team also will host New Mexico for the weekend meet. The following meet will be Nov. 21-23 in West Lafayette, Indiana, for the Purdue Invitational.
"We will face some very strong competition with Purdue, Louisville, Navy, Indiana State (coached by former GCU Assistant Coach Josh Christensen), Illinois State, Florida International and McKendree, a strong D-II program," Schaffer said. "This is our major fall meet and will give us a chance to put up early qualifying times for the NCAA Championships and the CSCAA National Invitational."
The Lopes do not have another meet until January, but in the meantime, those who qualify will perform in the Toyota U.S. Open Championships in Atlanta. This meet will give our swimmers a chance to go for Olympic Trial and Olympic qualifying times.
After the break, the first meet will be Jan. 11 at home against BYU and on Jan. 25 against California Baptist.
To kick off February and finish the regular season, the Lopes will head to UNLV on Feb. 1 before the WAC Championships on Feb. 26-29 in Houston.
After the WAC Championships, the Lopes will have the opportunity to qualify for three postseason competitions. The NCAA Zone E Diving Championships will take place March 5 to 10 for those who qualify and will be held in Federal Way, Washington. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Invitational occur March 12-14 in Cleveland. The CSCAA is an alternate event for those who do not qualify for NCAA Championships.
The NCAA Championships will be held in Athens, Georgia, for the women March 18-21 and the men's NCAA Championships will be held in Indianapolis March 25-28.
