Grand Canyon head coach
Steve Schaffer and Lopes redshirt sophomore
Emily Muteti headed to Casablanca, Morocco, to be part of Kenya's contingent for the 12th African Games.
Schaffer is coaching the swimming competition that starts Wednesday for Kenya, and Muteti is set to swim the 50-meter and 100-meter butterfly, the 50-meter freestyle and all relays.
Coming off of a busy summer, Muteti competed in the Kenyan national meet, World University Games in Naples, Italy, and the World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
"(Emily) swam faster in her events in each successive meet," Schaffer said. "It will be interesting to see if she can do that one more time to finish off the summer season. Ordinarily, it is pretty difficult to still be faster after two major meets, but Emily has been training very well, so I am excited to see what she can do."
The swimming portion of the African Games will span from Aug. 21-24 and will be located at Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.
