Grand Canyon golfter
Alexis Linam qualified to compete in the U.S. Golf Association's 119th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship next month.
Linam, who will enter her junior year with the Lopes this fall, has continued her strong in-season play with summer performances like second-place finishes at Monday's U.S. Amateur qualifier and last month's Arizona Golf Association State Amateur Match Play Championship.
"I'm beyond excited and happy for Alexis for qualifying for the USGA Women's Am," GCU head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "This is one of the most prestigious amateur events in the States and is a great opportunity for her to compete against some of the best. This summer has been a great journey for Alexis. She's worked extremely hard and it's paying off in a big way."
In Monday's qualifier at Tatum Ranch Golf Club in nearby Cave Creek, Linam birdied the first and sixth holes and finished with a 1-under-par round of 71 to earn one of the four qualifying spots. She was one of three golfers to finish the day under par and trailed winner Elizabeth Caldarelli of Texas A&M by one stroke.
GCU junior
Siripatsorn Patchana is an alternate for the tournament after taking sixth place in the field of 38.
Courtney Vogel also participated in the qualifier at Tatum Ranch.
Linam will play in the 119th U.S. Women's Amateur on Aug. 5-11 at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
There have been many notable U.S. Women's Amateur champions, including Beth Daniel (1975, 1977), Juli Inkster (1980-82), Kay Cockerill (1986-87), Kelli Kuehne (1995-96), Grace Park (1998), Morgan Pressel (2005), Danielle Kang (2010-11), Lydia Ko (2012) and Kristen Gillman (2014, 2018).
The runner-up list is just as impressive with names like Patty Sheehan (1979), Annika Sorenstam (1992), Jenny Chuasiriporn (1988), Jessica Korda (2010), Moriya Jutanugarn (2011) and Brooke Henderson (2014).
