OREM, Utah – Two Grand Canyon javelin performances stood out after the first day at the WAC Championships in Orem, Utah. GCU junior
Jesse Newman won his second consecutive javelin title and Lopes junior
Niki Xydona broke the school record with a personal-best 42.75-meter throw.
Xydona, who already competed in four hepathlon events prior to the javelin, used her last throw of finals to break the previous school record that had stood since 2012. She finished in second place for the javelin event.
Xydona sits in first place after the first four events of the heptathlon and still has an opportunity on Friday in the javelin throw of the heptathlon to break the school record again.
Newman, sitting in the top 15 in the nation in the javelin, did not let the pressure get to him and secured the Lopes' first meet win of the week. His 68.22-meter throw was over 4 meters farther than the second-place throw.
In the men's javelin, the Lopes had individuals place first, third, fourth, fifth and eighth to score 26 points.
In the first event of the day, senior
Courtney Logan and freshman
Samaria McDonald placed fourth and seventh in the hammer.
GCU scored 10 points in the men's pole vault in less-than-ideal conditions. Senior
Adam Peterson finished fourth, junior
Grant Carpenter took sixth and senior
Joseph Castellanos landed in seventh.
Friday's portion of the meet begins at 8:30 a.m. (Phoenix time) with the men's 110-meter hurdles of the decathlon.
