For the third straight week, a Grand Canyon track and field athlete won a weekly WAC award.
This week, junior
Niki Xydona picked up WAC Athlete of the Week honors after her school record performance in the heptathlon at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz.
Xydona set three personal record times in races and finished third in the javelin. The junior missed the 5,000-point mark by just 15 points and now ranks 31st in the nation with a score of 4,985 points.
Xydona won the pentathlon at the WAC Indoor Championships in February and now owns the school record in the heptathlon after a personal record score. Xydona entered the season with a personal record from her seasons at Utah State that was 290 points better than the GCU school record.
Xydona leads the WAC in the seven-event competition by over 850 points.
GCU has now broken or tied a school record in 20 straight meets spanning over a full year.
