CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team shattered a team record Monday as the Lopes climbed to third place in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic by firing a second-round GCU low score of 271 (17 under par).
The Lopes' round bested the previous mark of 14 under par, which was set twice, most recently at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in October 2017.
After an opening round of 291 (3 over par) put the Lopes in 12
th place, GCU got things rolling in a hurry during second-round action later Monday at Whirlwind Golf Club's par-72 course. Lopes second-round scores included junior
Trevor Lampson's 66, senior
Filip Lundell's 68, junior
Michael Salazar's 68 and junior
Jake Chanen's 69.
GCU did not use freshman
Matthew Braley's 74. Two Lopes also played as individual entries with freshman
Nick Hedman shooting 74 and sophomore
Adam Veenstra firing a 77.
UCLA ended the day in first place with a total of 558 (18 under par). The Bruins were followed by CSU Fullerton (560), GCU (562), Santa Clara (565) and host Wyoming (569) in the 20-team event.
Final-round action of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic will take place Tuesday at Whirlwind Golf Club.
