The Grand Canyon women's tennis team started WAC play Friday with a 6-1 home win over Seattle U for its fourth win in a row.
"That was a great start to conference play for the women," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "They started with high energy right from the beginning and it showed in the doubles results, winning on all three courts to get the point. They kept the momentum rolling in their favor right from the beginning."
The Lopes (6-7, 1-0 WAC) saved some of their best tennis for the final stretch run of the regular season and it showed against the Redhawks (5-9, 0-1 WAC). The team took the doubles point by winning on all three courts. Sophomore
Autum Prudhomme and junior
Celia Morel won 6-0 at No. 3 and juniors
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr won 6-3 at No. 1 to take the point. SophomoresÂ
Ludovica Infantino, who played doubles for the first time since Feb.16, and
Martina Lo Pumo won 6-3 at No. 2 moments later.
In singles, the Lopes had relied on the top four positions for the comeback win against Idaho State last week but the bottom of the lineup clinched the win against Seattle. Infantino and Prudhomme each finished quickly, winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1 at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively, and extending the Lopes lead to 3-0.
The match was clinched by Lo Pumo at No. 4 in a 6-1, 6-0 win while Morel followed quickly at No. 2 with a straight-set victory for the fourth consecutive match.
Occhipinti fell in a third-set tiebreaker for the lone Redhawk win of the day while Buhr closed out her match in a tiebreaker in the second set.
"We've got a long and busy weekend ahead of us but we are looking forward to getting back out there against the reigning WAC tournament champs," Prudhomme said of facing Kansas City on Saturday. "We expect a long match but our girls are feeling good with our recent results and four wins in a row. We're going to do our best to get another win."
GCU and Kansas City will compete at noon Saturday at GCU Tennis Facility. The Roos face New Mexico State in a neutral-site matchup at 4 p.m. Friday.
