The Grand Canyon women's tennis team won its fifth match in a row and improved to 2-0 in WAC play with a 6-1 win over Kansas City on Saturday at the GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes won a tightly contested doubles point and gained momentum during singles, taking five of the six matches.
"The girls competed very well today," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme. "Once again, they picked up right where they left off yesterday. They had great energy right from the beginning, and it was needed because all of the doubles matches were close. We were ready for a long tough battle today and that's exactly how the match started. So the girls were ready with the energy and kept it going 'til the end."
In doubles, the Lopes (7-7, 2-0 WAC) split the first two matches with Kansas City (3-10, 0-2), winning at No. 2 and falling at No. 1. It all came down to the final match at No. 3 with
Celia Morel and
Autum Prudhomme. The junior and sophomore duo trailed 4-3 but fought back to win the final three games, breaking serve to win 6-4 and take the doubles team point.
The Lopes used that momentum from doubles and took all six first sets.
Emilia Occhipinti bounced back from a Friday loss at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-2 over the Roos' Michela Xibilia.
Ludovica Infantino won her second straight match, dominating 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.
The team win was clinched by
Celina Buhr's third straight win at No. 3. Morel quickly followed with her fifth win in a row at No. 2 and Lo Pumo won her match in a third-set tiebreaker moments later.
The Roos' lone point of the day came at No. 6, where Thanushree Vale won in a third-set tiebreaker over Prudhomme.
GCU and New Mexico State will face off Sunday at 1 p.m. The Aggies will play against UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday before facing the Lopes.
