The Grand Canyon women's tennis team came back and defeated Idaho State 4-3 on Tuesday morning at the GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (5-7) after losing the doubles point came back in singles with wins from the top four positions.
"Girls did a great job in their match today," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "Going into singles we had to start from behind, so anytime we can get a win in that situation we'll take it. I was most proud today with the mental toughness the girls had."
Idaho State (6-7) took an early lead winning the doubles point.
Celia Morel and
Autum Prudhomme won at No. 3 to kick off the match but the Bengals took matches at Nos. 2 and 1 to take the point.
The Lopes regrouped in singles taking the first set at the top four positions. Morel turned in a solid performance at No. 2 winning 6-4, 6-1 for her third win in a row. After a Bengal win at No. 6,
Emilia Occhipinti won 7-5, 6-2 to tie the match up at 2-2.
The match would come down to
Celina Buhr at No. 3 after a
Martina Lo Pumo win at No. 4 and an Idaho State win at No. 5. Buhr won the first set 6-4 and held a 5-4 lead in the second set. ISU's Adriene Pavek tied the match at 5-5 but Buhr responded winning the final two matches to clinch the team win.
The Lopes will now turn their attention to the start of conference play on Friday. GCU will host the first WAC cluster welcoming every conference team to the GCU Tennis Facility hosting five neutral site matches and three home matches Friday through Sunday.
