TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon track and field team opened the outdoor season with little rust to show after winning the program's fourth straight indoor men's and women's conference titles.
Junior
Paige Hildebrandt and freshman
Jorden Okyere broke school records to open the season as the Lopes have now broken a school record in every meet they have attended since January 18, a stretch of eight weeks.
Hildebrandt entered the evening with the 1,500-meter school record. She left with a new top-mark for herself, teammates and future Lopes to beat. The junior broke the 4 minute, 35 second barrier with a 4:34.04 time and finished second overall.
Okyere had a coming out party in the WAC Indoor Championships in February with an individual title in the hammer throw. He continued the trend with a personal record in the hammer at 46.57-meters and ended the day with a school record in the discus. The freshman fouled on his first throw of the discus but broke the school record on his second throw. The Phoenix-native wasn't finished with the first school record, Okyere threw three inches farther with a 47.79-meter mark on his very next throw.
The day started with a handful of personal records in the women's javelin and men's hammer throw. It was highlighted by the second running event of the day, the women's 200 meter. Sophomore
Dora Filipovic ran the school's sixth fastest 200 time with a 24.27 second time.
Junior
Jesse Newman threw a hair shy of his personal record and school record with a 68.34-meter javelin throw on his final throw of the day.
Day two gets going at 10 a.m. with the men's pole vault.
