SEATTLE – The Grand Canyon track and field record books continue to be updated as sophomore
Cheyenne Walden and junior
Paige Hildebrandt broke school records for the Lopes on Friday at the Washington Husky Classic in Seattle.
In an interesting sequence of events, the Husky Classic was condensed from two days to one day and started earlier as the Pacific Northwest is expected to continue to be hit by Winter Storm Maya.
With original race times set for about 3 p.m. Friday or Saturday, the Lopes distance runners raced in the late morning Friday and did not let the schedule change affect them.
Hildebrandt finished the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:49.24, breaking her school record in the event by more than three seconds and ranking first in the WAC.
Walden, in the first 5,000-meter track race of her career, ran 17:10.40, breaking the school record by more than four seconds and ranking first and second in the WAC. Junior teammate
Elizabeth Balsan ran the 5,000 in 17:19.50.
At the Don Kirby Invitational, sophomore
Knowledge Omovoh added another event win to her name with a time of 56.12 in the 400 before running 24.78 in the 200.
Dora Filipovic ran a tough 400-200 within an hour. The sophomore ran 56.91 in the 400 before running the Lopes' fastest 200 time of the season at 24.66, which ranks third in the WAC. Freshman
Kennedy Quarles was the third Lope in Albuquerque to do the 400-200 within an hour of each other. Quarles ran 57.22 and 24.78 in the 400 and 200, respectively.
Sophomore
Zachary Galgan and senior
Nathan Wesolek jumped 5.03 meters in the pole vault, solidifying the first and second spots in the WAC with one competition date left before the WAC Championships.
The Lopes will conclude the Don Kirby Invitational on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
