Justin Rasmussen continued leading the Grand Canyon men's soccer offense when each scored a goal Saturday at Utah Valley in a 3-2 overtime loss.
The Lopes (4-8-4, 1-6-3 WAC) played their seventh overtime match of the season (0-3-4) despite having a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the match. The Wolverines (10-6-1, 7-3) bounced back to force overtime and win in the 92nd minute.
The Lopes got off to a strong start, scoring back-to-back goals in the seventh and eighth minutes of the match. Wilton put GCU on the board first with his fourth goal of the season at 6:29. Junior forward
Rey Gaytan fed the ball to senior defender
Austin Day, who set up Wilton for the header. Wilton put the ball in the back-right corner of the net for a 1-0 Lopes lead. The Essex, England, native is second on the team in offense this season with 11 points.
Rasmussen increased the Lopes lead to two only 49 seconds later with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Gaytan earned his second assist of the night, getting the ball from sophomore midfielder
Marios Andreou before passing it to Rasmussen to score in the bottom-right corner of the goal. The Lopes held on to their 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second half got off to a slow start with senior midfielder
Pambos Aristotelous taking the first shot for either team at 50:25. Rasmussen took another shot for the Lopes in the 57th minute, missing right, just before sophomore goalkeeper
George Tasouris made his third save of the match.
The Wolverines began their comeback in the 62nd minute of the match, scoring back-to-back goals at 61:38 and 62:43. Rasmussen attempted to put the Lopes back on top with a shot on goal in the 65th minute, but Utah Valley made the save.
Tasouris made a big save at 71:35, deflecting a shot on goal to keep the Lopes tied. The Nicosia, Cyprus, native finished with five saves on the night. The Lopes recorded six shots in the last 15 minutes of regulation but were unable to put the ball in the goal, sending the match to overtime.
The Wolverines scored in the 92nd minute to close the game and move into second place in the WAC.
