FINAL RESULTS
ELK GROVE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team completed a rally for the ages as the Lopes repeated as champions of the Sacramento State Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
"It was a great day and I am very, very proud of the team," said head coach
Mark Mueller. "Everyone did a fantastic job this week of staying in it and played great team golf. Everyone had a score that counted and today was a lot of fun."
A pair of unspectacular rounds left the Lopes in 5
th place to begin the day, still within striking distance of the team title, just seven shots behind.
GCU slowly chipped away at the lead, held at times by Long Beach State and UC Irvine.
Jake Chanen and
Matt McClung both birdied their 18
th holes, which ultimately resulted in the final score change to lift GCU into a tie with Long Beach State.
"The end of the tournament was awesome," said Mueller. "I'm really looking forward to a great couple of days of practice and seeing the guys compete at our home event."
The tiebreaker was the fifth best score (third-round only) of the day on both teams. That score belonged to
Trevor Lampson of GCU finishing with a 77. Long Beach State's fifth score was a 79, resulting in the Lopes claiming the tiebreaker.
Vinnie Murphy was again GCU's top finisher, claiming third place with a pair of sub-par rounds. He finished with a 214 total, just four shots off the winning number, held by Joe Fryer of LBSU.
Jake Chanen (72-75-72) and
Filip Lundell (77-70-72) finished in a tie for 11
th-place at 219.
Matt McClung recorded a top-25 in 23
rd place at 222. Lampson finished with one sub-par round and a 227 total, good for 35
th place.
The victory is GCU's third this season and it was a repeat as well. The Lopes won the tournament in 2017, defeating host Sacramento State.
GCU returns to host the GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course on March 16-17.
