HOUSTON — The Grand Canyon men's soccer team held a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute at Houston Baptist on Friday night, but the match was declared a "no contest" after a lightning delay amid inclement weather led to an unplayable field.
The Lopes lead was nine minutes shy of becoming official. Since the match did not meet the minimum of 70 minutes played, the game does not count and does not affect the win-loss record of either side.
A quiet first 20 minutes of action featured just three combined shots, but the Lopes scored the opening goal minutes later.
On a corner kick from the right flag in the 23rd minute, GCU sophomore forward
Josh Drack delivered a well-placed feed that found the head of
Julien Armaroli. The junior defender redirected the ball into the left corner of the net, scoring what would have counted as the first goal of his Lopes career for a 1-0 lead.
Nearing halftime, GCU's
Marco Afonso tracked down a ball in the left corner and carried it all the way to the top of the box. The sophomore fired from just outside the box and found the back of the net for the unassisted goal, giving the Lopes a 2-0 lead.
Armaroli's first career GCU goal and Afonso's second goal of the season become unofficial and do not count toward the season statistics.
Lightning first struck in the area at about 8:30 p.m. Houston time. The match was set to resume at about 9:30 p.m. but another strike was seen just moments before a restart of play. By the time the teams waited another 30 minutes, the field was unplayable due to rain.
The two schools will attempt to reschedule the match. Should the match go unplayed, the WAC standings will shift from total points to winning percentage due to the discrepancy in matches played.
GCU will wrap up the weekend with a Sunday match at Kansas City on Sunday with a 1 p.m. (Phoenix time) kickoff.
