Ben Assane led USL 2 side Asheville City SC to a victory over USL 1 Greenville Triumph SC on March 18, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup.
The former Lopes forward's contributions on the pitch earned him a spot on the U.S. Open Cup Team of the Week for the first round. Nineteen players were named to the team, including 12 "starters" and seven bench players, with Assane earning starter recognition.
Assane joined Asheville City in the 80-team Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for its first-round matchup against Greenville. The U.S. Open Cup is the country's oldest ongoing national soccer competition.
Soon to earn his GCU master's degree, Assane had an assist in Asheville City's second goal of the match, an 82nd-minute cross into the box from the right-hand side. After getting up from a hard challenge in the ninth minute of stoppage time, Assane stole a pass off the goalkeeper and ripped a shot past him for the third and decisive goal of the match.
His squad faces One Knoxville SC, a USL 1 team on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (Phoenix time) at North Carolina Asheville.
