Graduate forward
Ben Assane led USL 2 side Asheville City SC to a victory over USL 1 Greenville Triumph SC Wednesday March 18, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup.
His contributions on the pitch earned him U.S. Open Cup Team of the Week for the First Round. Nineteen players were named to the team, including 12 "starters" and seven bench players, with Assane earning starter recognition.
Assane joined Asheville City for their run in the U.S. Open Cup (USOC) - which is also called the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – for their first-round matchup against Greenville, two of 80 teams competing for the Cup, which is the country's oldest ongoing national soccer competition.
The soon to be GCU graduate had an assist in Asheville City's second goal of the match, an 82nd cross into the box from the right-hand side. After getting up from a hard challenge in the ninth minute of stoppage time, Assane stole a pass off a goal keep and ripped a shot past the goalkeeper for the third and decisive goal of the match.
His squad faces One Knoxville SC, a USL 1 team Tuesday, March 31 at 4 p.m. EST at Greenwood Field on the University of North Carolina Asheville's campus.
