KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Despite opening the match's scoring with a 23rd-minute goal, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team fell 2-1 at Kansas City on Sunday afternoon.
GCU sophomore
Josh Drack scored one of the more impressive Lopes goals on the season. Off a pass from senior defender
Alex Ramirez, Drack fired from the left side of the top of the area and found the far post. Drack's laser shot nicked off the post and went into the net for his second goal of the season.
The Roos (3-11, 2-6 WAC) appeared headed for a 36th-minute equalizer when GCU freshman goalkeeper
George Tasouris challenged an approaching forward off his line and left the goal vacated. Senior defender
Sam Gardner made two goal-saving stops on an open net to keep GCU's lead intact.
Nearing halftime, the Roos answered with their first goal of the game. The play was started by a UMKC corner kick which was temporarily cleared by the Lopes (6-8, 3-4 WAC). The Roos quickly played it back in and — in the ensuing frantic action — the ball found the feet of UMKC freshman David Ray-Campoy in the box with enough space to take an uncontested shot.
The Roos scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 57th minute on a play that developed much quicker than UMKC's previous goal. Four players were directly involved in the score on a series of quick touches. The end of the sequence was a feed from senior forward Michele Drago that led senior midfielder Henry Ramirez right into the box for a one-on-one with Tasouris that Ramirez finished.
GCU had its fair share of opportunities for a late equalizer. The Lopes took four corner kicks in the game's final 20 minutes, but none of them resulted in a goal. With under 90 seconds to play, freshman forward
Bert Wilton got a soft strike on the ball that caught the UMKC defense off guard, but the keeper was ready and made the save on GCU's last gasp.
The Sunday loss wrapped up a frustrating weekend for GCU after having a 2-1 lead washed away because of weather on Friday night at Houston Baptist.
GCU will wrap up the home schedule this weekend, welcoming Utah Valley on Friday before hosting Senior Day against No. 15 Air Force on Sunday.
