It was just 362 days ago that the Grand Canyon men's soccer team scored an overtime goal to defeat Utah Valley at GCU Stadium.
History repeated itself on Friday night with
Justin Rasmussen finding
Jackson Jellah on a corner kick in the 100th minute as the Lopes claimed a 2-1 victory.
"I just saw the ball floating," Jellah said. "I was like, 'Please, go in.' Just attack it and please get something on it. I got something on it and it went in the back of the net and the game was over."
Jellah ripped his jersey off and led a triumph of happy Lopes teammates behind him, culminating in a feet-first slide in front of the Havocs.
"I've never scored an overtime goal," Jellah said. "That was my first. I'm very excited for the team and I'm very excited moving forward."
It was just the second time this season that Rasmussen has taken a corner kick. The sophomore's left-footed strike found Jellah at the edge of the goal box for the golden goal. For Rasmussen, his first career assist comes after he scored his first career goal in the preceding home game.
GCU (7-8, 4-4 WAC) and Utah Valley (9-7, 6-3 WAC) each scored within three minutes in the first half.
It took just 10 seconds for the Lopes to advance the ball nearly the length of the field after gaining possession on the edge of their area.
Calvin Kissi found a streaking
Marco Afonso, who crossed a ball in from the left wing to
Josh Drack, who opened the scoring with the help of the right post. The 23rd-minute score was Drack's second goal in as many games and third goal of the season.
The Wolverines found an equalizer in the 26th minute with junior Blake Frischknecht scoring his sixth of the season.
A big momentum swing took place just before halftime when the Wolverines got the benefit of a foul call in the box. GCU goalkeeper
George Tasouris waited for a read off of the foot and dove to his right, saving the shot and keeping the tie intact.
In a tightly contested match, shots were in favor of the Lopes 17-15 and they took eight corner kicks compared to seven for Utah Valley. The eighth proved to be the difference for GCU.
The Lopes finish out the home schedule with Senior Day on Sunday, when No. 8 Air Force visits GCU Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
