Former WAC rivals meet for 23rd time in program history

Finishing the fifth and final game of a five game home stand, GCU hosts California Baptist Wednesday evening at 6 PM at GCU Stadium.
GCU has totaled at least 15 shot attempts in each of its last four contests. The Lopes rank fifth in the nation in shots per game (19.3) and is eighth in shots per game (8.17). The squad totaled 15 shots on goal over its first three games and have since recorded 34 over the last three played.Β
Freshman forward Arnau Camaño scored his team leading third goal of the season Saturday versus nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara. That goal led him to his second straight Mountain West Freshman of the Week honor. Camaño leads the Lopes with a .636 shot on goal percentage and has 11 shots, seven shots on goal and six points.Β
Senior Jorge Lopez tallied his team best third assist of the season against the Gauchos, improving his career total to 12. That total is now tied for second for career assists in the program's D-I era (est. 2013). He is tied with Justin Rasmussen and trails Marco Alfonso for the D-I era lead.Β
The Lopes are averaging just over eight corner kicks a game, a number that ranks eighth in the nation. GCU has 29 corners over its past three contests played.
Both Lopez and João Gonçalinho are second and third, respectively, in the Mountain West in total assists. The duo have combined for five of the team's nine assists this season, with the nine assists ranking second in the conference.Β
Wednesday marks the 23rd meeting between the two programs. GCU's first ever soccer match occurred on Sept. 13, 1985 in Riverside, California, against CBU, making it one of the program's oldest rivalries.Β
LAST TIME OUT
GCU narrowly fell to nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara last Saturday evening, 2-1.Β
Camaño scored his team best third goal of the season while Lopez earned the assist.Β
Freshman AJ Mather-Nash made his first collegiate start in goal, making two saves.Β
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
CBU enters Phoenix 3-2 overall and is coming off a win at LMU (1-0) Friday, Sept. 11.
Both losses have come against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.Β
Playing two goalies so far this season, the Lancers are 10th in the nation in shutout percentage (.600). All three wins have resulted in no goals allowed.
Blake D'Agostino is 26th in the nation and second in the Pac-12 in goals (4). His nine total points also rank second in the conference.Β
Ulrik StroemΒ has started the past three games in goal for the Lancers and owns a 1.0 goal against average, second best in the Pac-12.
CBU will play its fourth road game of the season of the six games played so far in 2026.
