Occhipinti wins singles, doubles brackets

SAN DIEGO — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team began its fall season at the SDSU Fall Classic hosted by San Diego State. Lopes junior Emilia Occhipinti won a singles consolation bracket and then teamed up with junior transfer Celia Morel to win the consolation bracket in the second doubles flight.

"The women showed good progress this weekend," GCU head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "We didn't start off the event with as many wins as we would've liked to on Friday, but each day the girls got better. We went 0-3 on the first day in doubles, and then we had two winning days in a row on Saturday and Sunday."

In doubles, the Lopes finished the weekend with a 3-6 record and saw two pairings regroup well after a loss on the first day. Morel and Occhipinti came back from a 6-2 loss to Air Force to win 6-2 against a San Diego State pairing and 6-1 over a a Cal State Northridge duo. The GCU sophomore paring of Autum Prudhomme and Martina Lo Pumo also ended the weekend on a high note with a 6-1 win over Augustina Rimoldi Godoy and Ellie Ashley of San Diego State.

In singles, the Lopes again started slow on the first day, winning only one match when Celina Buhr defeated Rimoldi Godoy 6-4, 6-4. In the final two days, the Lopes won five more matches, with victories from Ludovica Infantino, Valentina Mokrova, Celia Morel and Occhipinti. The junior from Ragusa, Italy, won the consolation bracket with straight set wins over Vanessa Valdez from Texas-El Paso and Mia Smith from San Diego State.

"Overall, the girls made adjustments from the first day to the second and then the last," Prudhomme said. "We're looking forward to learning from the weekend, working on it this week and going at it again next weekend at the Beach Tennis Tournament."

The Lopes will travel to Long Beach State for the Oct. 5-7 Beach Tennis Tournament.
