The Grand Canyon women's tennis team competed in the Beach Tennis Tournament at Long Beach State over the weekend and saw its win total increase by six matches.
Last week in San Diego, GCU only won nine matches but the Lopes increased that victory tally to 15 this weekend in Long Beach.
GCU enjoyed saw success across the board with eight Lopes recording a win in singles and doubles. Junior
Celina Buhr made the deepest run, advancing to the semifinals in the second singles flight. Buhr defeated Tiani Judalang of Cal State Fullerton in straight sets and Camilia Tumosa of Loyola Marymount in three sets before falling in consecutive tiebreakers to Yang Lee of Washington State.
Sophomores
Autum Prudhomme and
Ludovica Infantino also had two wins while
Emilia Occhipinti and
Valentina Mokrova each had one.
In doubles, three different GCU pairings each won a match over the three-day competition. In the top flight, Prudhomme and
Martina Lo Pumo defeated a Portland State pair 6-3 while Buhr and Mokrova won their opening match against Cal State Fullerton 6-3. In the extra matches, Occhipinti and
Celia Morel won in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) over a Portland State pair to end the weekend on a high note.
The team has this week off while getting ready for the annual ITA Southwest Regionals in San Diego, Calif., from Oct. 18-21.
