The Grand Canyon men's golf team is in contention after the first day of the El Macero Classic, hosted by UC Davis. Despite being in fifth place, the Lopes are just six shots off the lead in a tournament that should be set up for an exciting final round on Friday.
Oregon State leads the tournament with a 599 total, followed by host UC Davis at 601. Seattle is third, followed by Fresno State and GCU at 605.
GCU was led by
Vinnie Murphy who is just one shot off the lead. Murphy fired consistent rounds of 72 and 74. He is one shot back of co-leaders Ben Corfee (UC Davis) and Alex Lee (Fresno State).
Matt McClung is in 16
th place with a 152 total after rounds of 79 and 73.Â
Hayden Webb is just outside the top-20 with rounds of 73 and 80, good for a 153 total.
Jake Chanen shot rounds of 77 and 77, while
Billy Comeaux shot 80 and 80.Â
Michael Schaloum is playing for GCU as an individual and shot 79 and 79.
The final round of the 14-team El Macero Classic will take place on Friday at El Macero Country Club.
