The Grand Canyon men's golf team fired a final round 11-under-par, led by individual champion
Billy Comeaux, at the GCU Invitational. The Lopes claimed a second-place finish, coming in behind No. 20 Duke.
GCU gave it a shot on the final day, closing within three shots on the front nine, but Duke proved too strong as the squads both fired low rounds of the championship with a 273 total. The next best final round of the day went to Utah Valley with a 282 total, as UVU finished in fifth place as a team.
Duke won the team championship at 23-under. GCU came in second place at 17-under. Eastern Michigan finished third at 4-under, while LMU came in fourth at 1-under.
The individual win for Comeaux was the second consecutive victory for the senior. He led the field in par-4 scoring, going 6-under with a 3.82 scoring average.
Comeaux finished with a 203 total, firing rounds of 67-68-68.Â
Jake Chanen finished tied for fifth place with a 208 total, with rounds of 71-70-67.Â
Vinnie Murphy was also in the top-10 in ninth place with a 209 total and rounds of 69-72-68.
Matt McClung finished in a tie for 23
rd with a 215 total, while
Hayden Webb shot rounds of 73-73-74 to finish in a tie for 47
th place.
GCU also had individuals playing with
Michael Schaloum finishing in 22
nd place with rounds of 72-68-74.Â
Cole Cunningham finished in a tie for 30
th while
Colton Estevez finished in a tie for 56
th.
GCU is back in action at the Redhawk Invitational on April 3-4 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
