LIHUE, Hawaii – The Grand Canyon men's golf team completed a strong first day at the three-day John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua GC. The Lopes are in the 18-team field, along with 11 top-100 schools, including seven ranked in the top-50. GCU held its own, finishing the first round in a tie for 9
th place.
"Overall today was pretty good, we got off to a bad start but the boys really battled back," said head coach
Mark Mueller. "I was very happy for Jake, the way he came back and for Matt to end with three birdies was a great way to get some momentum going into tomorrow. Hayden and Vinnie were very solid all day. Billy had a bad finish but I look for him to get it going tomorrow."
GCU's first day total of 291, tied California, and was ahead of notable programs in Washington (294), New Mexico (295), Utah (301) and Washington State (302). The Lopes finished the day one shot behind Arizona.
Virginia, ranked No. 4 in the nation, leads the tournament with a 268 total, 20 under par.
The Lopes were led by
Jake Chanen and
Vinnie Murphy, both shooting even par 72 rounds playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively.
Chanen battled back after recording an early double bogey, recording an eagle and four birdies in his round. Murphy played a steady round with 14 pars, two birdies and two bogeys.
Hayden Webb, playing at No. 5, recorded a strong round of 73, while
Matt McClung and
Billy Comeaux both finished with 74s.
"As a team we are all very excited for tomorrow as we are playing with Cal, Washington, and U of A," said Mueller. "We look forward and are ready to embrace this opportunity tomorrow. This is where we want to be playing in a tournament like this and getting this pairing… can't wait to get after it and watch the guys compete."
GCU is back in action on Thursday for the second round of the John Burns Invitational in Hawaii.
