DENVER – Grand Canyon swimmers, Mark Nikolaev and Estela Davis Ortiz received conference honors for the week of Jan. 23-29. Nikolaev and Davis Ortiz were named CollegeSwimming.com Conference Swimmers of the Week for Division I and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) also awarded Nikolaev his fifth Swimmer of the Week award this season.
The pair of swimmers earned this recognition following their outstanding performances at the Notre Dame Shamrock Invitational last weekend, where the Lopes went up against some tough Top 25 competition.
On Day One, the Nikolaev finished second in the 200-yard IM (1:47.11) and contributed to both the 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay breaking Rolfs Aquatic Center pool records before setting two new pool records in his individual events on Day Two. Nikolaev set records in the 100-yard backstroke (46.18) and 200-yard backstroke (1:43.58), the latter of which had been held by Olympian Matt Greavers since 2005.
Davis Ortiz placed in the top five for all her individual events. In addition to winning the 400-yard IM (4:20.93), she snagged two third place finishes in the 200-yard IM (2:02.92) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.93) as well as a fourth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (55.95).
