SACRAMENTO – The Grand Canyon men's golf team wrapped up its second tournament of the season when they traveled to compete in the Sacramento State Invitational. Out of the 12 teams competing in the tournament, the Lopes finished right in the middle of the pack with a sixth place finish led by
Alex Kline placing in the top-15.
This was the second straight tournament GCU competed in that took place in California and Kline came ready to play, finishing in a tie for 15th place. Kline was consistent in the first two rounds, shooting a 76 in rounds one and two but ended with a bang posting a 69 in his final round. Kline ended the tournament with a score of 221, putting him at +5 for the tournament.
Just two spots behind Kline was
Billy Comeaux with an impressive last two rounds to close out the tournament. After struggling in the first round with a 78, Comeaux fired back with two solid rounds, shooting a 73 in the second and third round, to close out the tournament at +8 putting him in 17th place. Right behind Comeaux in 19th place was
Cole Cunningham who was the most consistent golfer from GCU throughout the entire tournament. Cunningham would start the first round with a 76 and that would be his highest round of the tournament, making improvements in the second and third round with a 74 and 75.
Hayden Webb came close to cracking the top-25 with a 26th place finishing shooting a 74 in the final round to put him at +11 for the tournament.
Jake Byrum finished in a tie for 31st place, with a score of 227 after posting his lowest score in the first round, shooting a 74.
As a team, GCU had their best round on the final day, posting a 289 score in the third round, helping them pass Cal State Northridge on the final day. GCU will return home to compete in the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. starting on March 18.
