The Grand Canyon men's and women's track teams lined up with some of the best athletes in the country, professional and collegiate, wrapping up two days of competition on Saturday at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
"We had an outstanding two day meet that will set us up well for our goal of winning the WAC indoor track and field championships in three weeks," head coach
Tom Flood said. "Some of these open meets are very difficult, especially when you have Olympic champions such as Aries Merritt, Greg Rutherford, Lolo Jones and Queen Harrison competing in the same events as our athletes. Some of our athletes may not have placed as well or advanced as usual, but we had a number of good performances."
Emily Wilkinson continued her tear on the GCU indoor record books, this time breaking
Rebekah Young's 3,000-meter school record of 10:21.05 that she had set just two weeks ago at the Cherry and Silver Invitational, also at the University of New Mexico. Racing at altitude, Wilkinson finished in third place with a time of 10:12.40, one that converts to 9:57.31 at sea level. Young finished in fourth place in a time of 10:20.18, which beat her previous record-breaking time from two weeks ago. Wilkinson and Young are now first and second in the WAC standings in the 3,000 meters.
Young followed up her fourth-place finish Friday night, by coming back to win her heat of the mile on Saturday with a season-best time of 5:13.35. Her time was nearly 13 seconds better than her time at the NAU Team Challenge three weeks ago in Flagstaff. Her altitude-converted time of 5:06.52 currently ranks her fifth in the WAC standings.
In the women's weight throw,
Sasha-Gaye Marston finished in second place overall with a throw of 17.78 meters that now ranks first overall in the WAC. Marston's throw came on her third attempt of the day. Her previous best came from the NAU Team Challenge on Jan. 16 where she recorded a mark of 16.45 meters.
Both men's and women's 4x400 meter relays teams had strong showings in Albuquerque as well. The men won their heat with a time of 3:14.88 and continue to be the top in the conference. The women placed third in the second heat of the relay and took over the lead in WAC rankings with a time of 3:51.49.
Flood plans to lighten the workload for his squads next weekend as the Lopes return to Flagstaff to compete in the NAU Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
