INDUSTRY HILLS, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the regular season at the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Out of 10 teams, the Lopes finished in sixth place ending the tournament with a score of 908, putting them at +44 as a team.
GCU was consistent in its play throughout the entire tournament as they finished in sixth place at the end of all three rounds. The team started the tournament with a round of 301 and concluded with another round of 301. Out of the three teams from the Western Athletic Conference in the invitational, GCU finished in second place ahead of CSU Bakersfield and right behind fifth place Utah Valley.
Hayden Webb finished with the best score from GCU finishing in 16
th place. After three rounds, Webb shot 223 for the tournament, putting him at +7 and the third lowest score from any player in the WAC. Webb started the final round in a tie for fifth place but struggle on the final day, shooting 78.
Brett Wilson was right behind Webb as he finished in 19
th place at +10. After struggling in the second round shooting a 79, Wilson saw improvements in his game, cutting his score down by three strokes to end the tournament shooting 226.
Jake Byrum moved up five spots in the leaderboard on the final day, improving his score by five strokes from the second round to the third round. In the first two rounds of the tournament Byrum shot 77 and 78 and for the final round, Byrum saved his best for the last round shooting a 73 to end the tournament at +12.
Andres Caballero's best round would come on the final day as he a shot 75 in the final round to end the tournament at +20, in a tie for 42
nd place.
Colton Estevez also shot his lowest round on the final day as well, shooting +77 to end the tournament at +42.
The Lopes will be back in action on Sunday, March 7
th, as they head back to California to participate in the Sacramento State Invitational.
