RAYMORE – The Grand Canyon men's golf team claimed the Bill Ross Intercollegiate championship by two shots over Kansas State on Tuesday afternoon in Raymore, Missouri.
"I am extremely proud of this team," said head coach Mark Mueller. "This was a team effort. The guys really battled today and hung tough the whole way. It was a lot of fun to watch. This is what we practice for and work hard for. To put ourselves in this position and the guys really came through."
GCU was led by freshman
Jake Chanen, who earned medalist honors by firing rounds of 66, 71 and 73, to finish -6 for the tournament, winning by a shot over Adam Fisher (Missouri State) and Matt Green (Kansas State).
"This week was great for us, a step in the right direction," said Chanen. "Everyone put their best out there and that's all you can ask for. It just so happened that we were fortunate enough to come away with the win."
The 12-team field included several programs from the Midwest, including UMKC, Wichita State, Kansas St. and Stephen F. Austin.
"This week is special to me, considering this is my second collegiate event," said Chanen. "I definitely have some things to work on and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."
In addition to Chanen claiming the individual title, both
Vinnie Murphy and
Billy Comeaux finished tied for 5th. The GCU duo finished tied at -1 for the tournament, helping lift the Lopes to the team title. There were only six players to shoot under par for the tournament and three of those were by the Lopes.
"Jake winning individual is icing on the cake... he played great all tournament and really battled the last hole to win by 1," said Mueller. "He held it together stayed patient and got the job done. Billy and Vinnie were very good all week very steady... they really clutched up the last 2 holes and made par putts. Without them making those we don't win the tournament. That was really fun to watch. Grant hung tough today and made par on the last hole. Matty struggled a bit but we will need a bounce back from him. Overall just a great tournament and could not be more proud of the team and coach brett, he and jake really made a great team this event."
Matt McClung and
Grant Calender also played in the tournament, including Calender with a big eagle on No. 13 to give GCU a lift.
For the tournament, GCU took advantage of the par 5s, shooting a tournament best -23 on the par 5s. The Lopes played the par 5s at -7 during the final round on the par 72, 7,156 yard Creekmoor Golf Club.
GCU is back in action next week at the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate on October 9-10.
