CHICAGO – The Grand Canyon men's golf team moved up a spot on the final day of the 12-team Northern Intercollegiate to finish in seventh-place.
The tournament was played at Beverly Country Club, hosted by Northern Illinois. No. 1 Illinois won the tournament as the only team under par at 7-under, winning by 53 shots.
GCU was led by
Matt McClung who finished in 11
th-place overall. It was a strong tournament for McClung who led the Lopes, despite playing as the No. 5 spot in the lineup.
Vinnie Murphy finished tied for 14
th-place, rebounding from an opening round 78, to shoot consecutive rounds of 73.
Jake Chanen finished in 44
th place, while
Billy Comeaux (48
th place) and
Grant Calender (62
nd place) also competed for the Lopes in Chicago.
Grand Canyon is back in action at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate next week on October 17-18, hosted by New Mexico State. Last year the Lopes finished runner-up at the NM State tourney.
