OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon men's soccer team faced one of the best teams in the nation Thursday night as they went on the road to face No. 21, Utah Valley. Against the best defense in the Western Athletic Conference, the Lopes managed to score a goal but it wasn't enough as they dropped the 3-1 match to the Wolverines. GCU is now 6-8-3 this season.
Utah Valley allowed just one goal in its last six matches in conference play and
Andy Alanis scored his first goal of the season late in regulation. After receiving a rebound off
Wedner Delmonte's shot, Alanis fired off a shot from 17-yards out for his second career goal.
It was a physical first half as a combined 18 fouls were called with GCU being issued two yellow cards. Utah Valley took an early 1-0 lead as Skyler Milne scored in the 17th minute but GCU continued to apply pressure on a very talented UVU back-line. The Lopes outshot the Wolverines 8-5 in the first half with two shots on goal.
The Wolverines began to pull away in the second half, scoring two goals in the first 20 minutes. GCU goalkeeper,
Kendyl Day, was busy in the second half making four saves after UVU attempted 12 shots in the final 45 minutes.
GCU will head back to Phoenix for its Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 30, CSU Bakersfield at GCU Stadium.
