For the final weekend of conference play in the regular season, The Grand Canyon men's soccer team will face a top-25 in the country before returning home for its final home match of the season. The Lopes will hit the road to face Utah Valley and to close out the weekend, GCU will host its Senior Day as they take on CSU Bakersfield.
Â
On Sunday, Oct. 30, GCU will honor its eight seniors,
Ben Barkoff,
Kendyl Day,
Alexandros Halis,
Koray Karakas,
Jose Rodriguez Nieblas,
Jaime Olabarria,
Jordan Slack and
Daniel Wall before the start of the match. These eight seniors have combined for 22 wins throughout their four years.
Â
For the third time in six weeks, GCU's
Niki Jackson was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals in GCU's first undefeated weekend in conference play. Jackson continues to be one of the nation's biggest offensive threats as he ranks third in the country with 14 goals. Without question Jackson has the best goal scorer in the WAC, as he has scored five more goals then the next closest player.
Â
Finishing the season strong is
Alexandros Halis as he now has dished out six assists, the second most in conference this season while
Damian German is now tied for ninth with four goals. The defense is coming of one of their best weekend, allowing just one goal in 180 minutes. Goalkeeper,
Kendyl Day, recorded his second shutout during conference play and his fourth of the season. Heading into the weekend GCU sits in fifth place but just two points out of third place.
Â
Scouting Utah Valley
The Lopes have a tough task to start the week as they face Utah Valley, which is ranked No. 21 in the country and No. 2 in the West region. The Wolverines are riding a six match winning streak in conference and have the most overall wins in the WAC this year. After losing its first WAC match of the season to Seattle U, the Wolverines have not lost a match since, as goalkeeper Mitch Jensen has been stellar between the posts, allowing just one goal in six games with a 0.17 goals against average.
Â
Scouting CSU Bakersfield
Currently the Roadrunners sit in eighth place in the WAC standings but just two points away from sixth place as they look to clinch a spot in the WAC Championships. Out of the 13 goals CSUB has scored this season, seven different players have scored led by Julian Zamora with four goals and two assists for a team-high 10 points. Throughout their games, the Roadrunners have had a balance scoring attack, converting six goals in the first half and seven goals in the second half.
