NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Grand Canyon swimming and diving teams combined for five first-place finishes and 16 top-five finishes on Friday in the first day of the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. Along with the Fighting Irish, the Lopes also faced Iowa, Clemson (diving), Illinois State and Missouri State.
Leading the way at the event was the Lopes' men's squad with three individual wins and relay victory. Mark Nikolaev jumped started the Lopes' evening session as he touched the wall in 1:47.41 in the 200-yard individual medley, taking the top spot in the event just ahead of team Iegor Lytvenok. To earn a second-place finish, Lytvenok completed the race in 1:49.04, and was joined by Daniil Antipov in fourth place (1:50.42) for a trio of Lopes in the top five.
Mazen Elkamash also posted a victory for Grand Canyon, edging by teammate Illya Glazunov for the best time in the 50-yard freestyle. Elkamash touchd in 20.12, just .04 ahead of Glazunov, while Jacob Lambros grabbed a fifth-place finish in 20.70. Also earning a top-five finish individually was the Lopes' top diver, Michael Bidak, who easily took first place in the 3-meter event with a score of 335.20.
The Lopes' men's team rounded out its victory list with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. GCU's A team touched the wall in 3:14.19 for the victory, while the B squad added another top-five finish by ending in fourth place in 3:20.40.
On the women's side, Grand Canyon was paced by Jovanna Koens, who led a trio of top-five finishes in the 50-yard freestyle. Koens touched first in 23:14 and was followed by Jade Howard in third place (23:47) and Samiha Mohsen in fifth (23.62). Also earning spots within the top five was Iryna Glavnyk, whose time of 2:04.68 in the 200-yard IM was good enough for second place.
In the relay events, GCU's 400-yard medley relay squad pulled out a second-place finish in 3:46.76, while the 200-yard freestyle squad finished in fourth.
Grand Canyon returns to action on Saturday for the final events of the Shamrock Invitational.
