PHOENIX – The GCU men's volleyball team improved to 4-0 win their second win over Holy Names University. The Lopes beat the Hawks in three sets on Saturday, Jan. 16 by scores of 25-11, 25-15, and 25-16.
Grand Canyon is playing three games in two days and rested many of their starters during the match with Holy Names. Fortunately, the Lopes received great production from their entire lineup. Many of the younger players were able to see court time in this match.
"Our younger guys did a really nice job this morning," Werle said. "We will quickly move past this match and focus on tonight."
Middle hitter
Sean Saxton recorded 7 kills and 4 blocks to lead GCU in both categories. Sophomore
Cullen Mosher had 6 kills and 5 digs while redshirt freshman
Trent Mathews contributed 5 kills.
Senior outside hitter
Gerrard Lipscombe also had 7 kills and helped guide the Lopes with his leadership. GCU limited their errors and only committed 8 hitting errors for the match, compared to 17 for Holy Names.
"The guys came in with a focus on blocking and limiting our errors," Werle noted. "We averaged 6 errors per set and when you can keep that number below 8, you will win a lot of matches."
The Lopes will face off later tonight against the UC Merced Golden Bobcats at 7 p.m. in Antelope Gymnasium.
