PHOENIX - The GCU men's volleyball team hosts their first home matches of the 2016 season this weekend at Antelope Gym. The Lopes will face the Holy Names Hawks at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 and again on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. For their second match of the day, Grand Canyon will play the UC Merced Bobcats on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.

GCU is currently 2-0 and is the only remaining undefeated team in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. The Lopes defeated Hope International 3-1 and UC San Diego 3-0 last weekend to earn the first victories of Head Coach Matt Werle's tenure.

"We are very excited to play in front of our own crowd on our floor," Werle noted. "This past weekend was a good start to our season but we are really forcing the issue to focus on what is directly in front of us."

Shalev Saada has led the Lopes offensively so far this season, recording 28 combined kills in the first two matches.
Sky Engleman was named the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week after leading GCU with 30 combined kills last weekend.
Gerrard Lipscombe also has 22 kills this season and
Ryan Mather has added 19 kills.

Scouting the HawksThe Holy Names University Hawks are currently 0-2 after being swept in their first two matches by UC Santa Cruz and Benedictine. The Hawks are led by outside hitters Trent Compton and Conan True. Compton leads the Hawks with 10 kills for the season while True has nine. Ali Oliver, also the head coach for the women's volleyball program at Holy Names, is entering her second season at the helm.

Scouting the BobcatsThe UC Merced Bobcats dropped a pair of matches to Benedictine (Mesa) last weekend to fall to 0-2 on the season. They are coached by David Noble, who has been in charge of the program since it began three seasons ago. The Bobcats are led by outside hitter Cole Smith who recorded 16 kills in each of the matches against Benedictine. Daniel Sabzehzar also has 22 kills to lead UC Merced.
