PHOENIX – Grand Canyon's men's volleyball team improved to 5-0 after a three-set victory over UC Merced on Saturday, Jan. 16. The Lopes took down the Bobcats 25-14, 25-13, and 25-14.
"This was a very successful weekend for the program," Werle stated. "It is the best start in program history. Over the weekend, we were able to play 16 different athletes and all contributed to the wins in one way or another. It was extremely valuable in terms of match experience."
Middle hitter Ashton King had a statistically perfect night for the Lopes, recording 9 kills on 9 attempts. King also had 3 block assists. Gerrard Lipscombe completed his successful weekend by contributing 8 kills and 4 digs for the match.
Werle noted that the experience provided over the past few weekends will be valuable heading into future matches.
"We will be heading to Hawaii on Tuesday for two matches," Werle said. "This will be a real test for us. It stimulates what our conference schedule looks like. We will be playing back to back nights in front of a hostile crowd. We need to refocus immediately."
The Lopes will travel to play Hawaii on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 10 p.m. and again on Friday, Jan. 22 at 10 p.m. Both games will be held at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
