PHOENIX - The GCU men's volleyball team travels to Honolulu this weekend to face the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors. The Lopes will play at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21 and again at 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan 22. Both games will be held at the Stan Sherriff Center.
Â
Grand Canyon is off to their best start in program history, holding a 5-0 record. The Lopes are the only remaining undefeated team in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and picked up two victories over Holy Names University and one win over UC Merced last weekend.
Â
Head Coach Matt Werle noted that the two matchups with Hawai'i will be important for the Lopes as they prepare for MIVA action.
Â
"The games with Hawai'i will be a real test for us," Werle said. "It simulates what our conference schedule looks like. We will be playing on back to back nights in front of a hostile crowd."
Â
The Warriors are 4-1 on the season after splitting two matches with No. 11 Pepperdine last week. Hawai'i is led by 6
th year head coach Charlie Wade and currently holds a 2-0 advantage in the head-to-head series with GCU after taking two matches from the Lopes in 2012. Both matches were extremely close, as Hawai'i won the first match in five sets and the second in four sets.
Â
Senior
Gerrard Lipscombe is leading the Lopes this season. He has recorded 44 kills and 25 digs in five matches this year from his outside hitter position. Libero
Sky Engleman was named the MIVA Player-of-the-Week once this season for his defensive performance.
