The Grand Canyon University track and field team opened its 2016 indoor season with a number of conference-leading marks as they took part in the Lumberjack Team Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz. on Saturday.
Sophomore
Scott Marshall kicked off the season in a big way, tying Vince Frawley's school record of 5.10 meters in the pole vault set in 2012. Marshall, who cleared the height on his third attempt, came away with a second-place finish. Junior
Jennifer Rolph took home the only event win with her 3.90m mark in the women's pole vault. After taking three attempts to hit 3.80m, Rolph cleared 3.90m on two tries to claim the event win.
"We held out several of our top performers for various reasons and didn't put our top three athletes in every event to give as many athletes as we could the opportunity to compete," head coach
Tom Flood said. "That being said, we had 13 performances that are leading the WAC Conference. Overall, I am pleased with the performances for our first track and field meet of the season."
The Lopes had 13 performances that currently place them at the top of the Western Athletic Conference in their events.
For the women, Rolph, Sasha Gaye Marston (weight throw, 16.45m), Alex Gilbert (400m, 58.03),
Briana Myers (60m hurdles, 8.77),
Emily Wilkinson (1 mile, 5:21.75),
Jalissa Smith and
Shonda Jones (high jump, 1.60m), and the distance medley relay team (13:10.83) all had WAC-leading marks.
On the men's side, Marshall,
Pierre-Louis Ricou (60m hurdles, 8.22),
Aaron Thurber (200m, 21.92),
Marcus Flannigan (long jump, 7.10m), and the 4x400m relay team (3:16.15) had conference-best marks in their debut meet.
The meet was scored as a series of dual-meets with the men winning each of their matchups while the women beat all teams except for UCLA.
The Lopes return to the track next weekend as they travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to take part in the Cherry and Silver Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
