Grand Canyon added four more champions during Day 3 of the Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio, Tex., Friday.
Iegor Lytvenok set pool, team and WAC records with a time of 3:43.52 (an NCAA 'B' qualifying time) in taking the top spot in the 400-IM. Lytvynok beat the old pool and WAC record set in 2014 by Wyoming's Ryan Nelson (3:45.20). He also beat Nelson on Friday, who placed second in the race at 3:47.63.
The Lopes defended titles in the women's 400-medley relay and 400-IM. In the relay,
Iryna Glavnyk,
Vangelina Draganova,
Rebecca Coan and
Hannah Kastigar won with a time of 3:40.22.
Kastigar defended her 400-IM crown with an NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 4:12.42.
Yara Fakhry was fifth in the race at 4:28.30.
Glavnyk added GCU's fourth win of the day, dominating the 100-back. Glavnyk clocked in with an NCAA 'B' time of 53.63, nearly two seconds faster than her closest competitor.
The Lopes had a number of other strong performances. Coan and
Fedir Bolychev placed third in the women's and men's 100-fly, respectively. In the 100-breast, Draganova was third and
Daria Talanova added a seventh. For the men,
Youssef Elkamash placed fourth and
Mantas Auruskevicius was sixth.
Teamwise, GCU's women are third with 332 points. Northern Arizona (478) and New Mexico State (383) have the top two spots. The men are fourth with 396.5 points. UNLV leads with 476.5, followed by Air Force (470.5) and Wyoming (447.5).
The Lopes will be back in the pool tomorrow for the final day of the championships. A men's and women's WAC team champion will be crowned following Saturday's action in San Antonio. For more information, including live links, fans can visit
