BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In their first match of the season against a conference team, the Grand Canyon University men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Bakersfield Saturday. The men's team won
176-122 and the women's team won
156.5-143.5.For the women's swim team, they opened the match with first and second place finishes in the 200-medley relay.
Iryna Glavnyk,
Kathleen Robertson,
Rebecca Coan, and
Jovanna Koens took first place with 1:45.07. Close behind with a time of 1:47.20, the team of
Samiha Mohsen,
Vangelina Draganova,
Hannah Peseau, and Kelsey Lang finished second.
Glavnyk placed first in the 100-back (56.66), 200-back (2:04.51), and 200-IM (2:06.86). Peseau finished second in the 100-back with a time of 59.66 and second in the 100-butterfly (58.08) .
Coan (2:07.71) and
Yara Fakhry (2:09.99) picked up the top-two times in the 200-butterfly and Coan also finished first in the 100-butterfly (57.38). Koens had the top-time in the 50-free (24.09). Koens continued her success with runner-up placement in the 100-free.
Draganova was the runner-up in the 100-breast (1:06.23), only 0.23 behind Bakersfield's top-finisher.
Angelina Mikish and Robertson finished third and fourth, respectively. Fakrhy and Draganova placed first and second in the 200-breast with times of 2:21.16 and 2:23.69, respectively.
The men's swimming team earned a first place finish in the 200-medley relay where
Mark Nikolaev,
Youssef Elkamash,
Daniil Antipov, and
Illya Glazunov picked up a time of 1:30.41.
Iegor Lytvenok had a time of 1:37.70 in his victory in the 200-freestyle event, while he won the 200-back event with a time of 1:51.14. He also won the 200-IM (1:46.95).
Nikolaev had a first place finish in the 100-back and a second place finish in the 200-back. Antipov picked up the title in the 200-butterfly and the 100-butterfly. Glazunov placed first in the 50-free (20.85) and second in the 100-free (46.14).
GCU took the top-two slots in the 100-breast with
Youssef Elkamash and
Mantas Auruskevicius earning times of 57.05 and 58.3, respectively. Elkamash, Auruskevicius, and
Adam Kastigar earned the top-three places in the 200-breast.
In diving, the men earned the top-two spots in the three-meter, led by
Michael Bidak's 283.35 and
Todd Alden had 260.33. Bidak,
Michael Winfrey and Alden snagged the first three scores in the one-meter.
Rachel Adams (209.85) and
Elizabeth Fogel (205.88) took second and third in the three-meter dive.
Menna Elmidany (231.83) and Fogel (215.48) finished second and third in the one-meter.
"I was very impressed with today's performance,especially with the 1-2-3 sweep of the men's one meter event," said head diving coach Tracey Eldridge. "The women also did very well and contributed to the win over Bakersfield. I am excited to see how we look with another month of training under our belts."
The Lopes will host Seattle U Oct 23-24 out at the Southwest Valley YMCA in Goodyear, Ariz. Matches will begin at 1 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 11 a.m. on Oct. 24. The women's squad will also be facing Loyola Marymount during the event. A full recap will be available at
