The Grand Canyon University swimming and diving teams have released their upcoming season schedule. The entire 2014-15 men's schedule can be viewed
here and the women's schedule
here.
"We have a great schedule this year with some new additions that will make this our most competitive season ever," said head swimming coach Steve Schaffer.
The 2014-15 season will mark the first for the Canyon diving program since 2010-11, when the Lopes had one diver on the roster.
"Adding diving is another step in our plan to emerge from the four-year Division I transition period as a top 30 NCAA program, and then keep climbing upward," said Schaffer.
The divers will be under the direction of second-year head coach Tracey Berghian, who came to GCU after a one-year stint at New Mexico, where Berghian served as the head diving coach for the Lobos.
"Building a Division I diving team for GCU has been an amazing experience and I am excited to watch it grow over the next few years," said head diving coach Tracey Berghian. "My goals for this team are to have the women and men in the top three for one-meter, three-meter, and platform events at the WAC Championships."
The season action will get underway when the Antelopes host their Alumni Meet on September 27 at the Southwest YMCA in Goodyear—which will serve as the new home for the GCU swimmers and divers. Following a meet at New Mexico State (October 11) for the GCU women, both the Canyon men and women will be back at home on October 18 when they host Bakersfield in a conference affair.
Trips to Seattle (October 24-25) and Air Force (November 8) are slated to be the final conference meets for GCU in 2014. GCU will take its first of three trips to the state of Texas for the Art Adamson Invitational, November 20-22. The invitational will be conducted on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station. The first half of the season will wrap up when Canyon visits Greensboro, N.C., December 4-6, for the USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships.
"We are thrilled to have been invited to the Art Adamson Invitational," said Schaffer. "It is a big upgrade in the competitiveness of our schedule. In fact, it will be the toughest competition we have seen in the history of the program."
The first and only home action for GCU in 2015 comes when the Lopes welcome North Dakota to Phoenix for back-to-back duals on January 9 and January 10. Northern Colorado's women's team will also be in town competing on the January 9, as both days will mark as conference meets.
The Grand Canyon divers will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Air Force Diving Invitational, January 30-31. The Canyon swimmers will have their final tune-up before the WAC Championships the same weekend in Provo, Utah, when the Lopes take on BYU in a dual meet.
"It is great that we could add the BYU meet to our schedule," said Schaffer. "They are a very well-coached program and I think this meet could become a very good regional rivalry meet for both teams."
The WAC Championships will begin on February 25 and run through February 28 in San Antonio, Tex. Last year, the GCU men took fourth and the women fifth at their inaugural WAC Championships.
The 2014-15 campaign will come to a close when the Lopes head to the CSCAA National Invitational, March 23-25. The three-day affair, which will be held in Rockwall, Tex., was won by the Canyon men a year ago.
"We have a good blend of WAC opponents and non-conference competition that will challenge us throughout the season and prepare for a very competitive WAC
Championship meet where we expect to improve upon our 2014 finishes," concluded Schaffer.
