The Grand Canyon University men's and women's swimming teams have been recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for their success in the classroom. The two teams have recently earned the Division I Team Scholar All-American Award, which is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
"I am very proud of that both our women's and men's teams have once again earned the Team Scholar All-American recognition," said head coach Steve Schaffer. "Academic success is an expectation for us and our athletes continue to do a great job."
The Canyon women boasted an impressive team GPA of 3.49, while the men posted a team GPA of 3.22.
Two athletes from each the men's and women's program were recipients of individual accolades, as
Iryna Glavnyk and
Hannah Kastigar were tagged with CSCAA Scholar All-American Honorable Mention honors on the women's side and
Mazen El Kamash and
Ivan Nechunaev picked up the same honors for the their efforts on the men's side.
"I think that it is fantastic that we had four individuals qualify in our first year in transition to DI. It says a lot about the quality of our athletes, and the fact that three of the four were freshman says a lot about the quality of our recruits," added Schaffer. "We are moving in the right direction and hopefully we will do even better next year."
The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester and again in the spring to recognize teams achieving a 3.0 in the semester coinciding with the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
