Former Grand Canyon University swimmer and four-time individual NCAA champion, Eetu Karvonen, is competing this weekend at the Finnish Nationals in Jyvaskyla, Finland.
Karvonen is using the meet to ready himself for the World University Games and the World Championships that will take place later this summer. For the Finnish Nationals, Karvonen has already or will be competing in the 50 and 100 breaststroke events, which he will compete in at the University Games and World Championships. In addition to the breaststroke events, he will swim in the 50 fly and 400 medley relay this weekend.
At the time of this article, Karvonen won the 100 breast event by 0.01 on the opening day of the meet, posting a mark of 1:02.35.
"I actually think the preliminary swim was the better swim in terms of form," said GCU head coach Steve Schaffer. "He was more relaxed. The time is good given we are aiming at WUGs and World Championships, but the whole point of coming here was to work out any kinks. I think Eetu just needs to stay a bit more relaxed going into the rest of his finals here and the big meets down the road."
On the second day, Karvonen recorded a time of 25.44 in the 50 fly preliminary and followed that with a 25.32 in the finals. Both swims were new lifetime bests and good enough for a seventh-place finish in the finals.
Karvonen will swim the 50 breast on Saturday and the 400 medley relay on Sunday.

The World University Games are slated for July 8-18 in Kazan, Russia. Karvonen is scheduled to compete on July 10 and 14. If he advances to the finals of each event, he will also swim on July 11 and 15.
Karvonen completed his tenure at GCU as the most decorated swimmer in school history. He leaves as the two-time NCAA champion in the 100 and 200 breast events, as well as swimming on the 400 medley relay championship squad.
