The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team has earned a bid to the NCAA Championships, as announced on NCAA.com this evening.
The 13th-ranked women will see a familiar foe in third-ranked Hawai’i Pacific when they travel to the island of Oahu for their opening-round match with Sea Warriors on April 27 at 1 p.m. (Arizona time). The Antelopes and Sea Warriors have met in the NCAA Championships each of the past two seasons, with HPU winning both matches. The winner will advance to the Round of 16, which will be contested in Surprise, Ariz. from May 8-11.
“We are super excited to get a berth into the NCAA Championships,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “With the strong teams we have added in the PacWest, we were still able to earn a spot in the postseason. It is a great accomplishment considering we have two of the top five teams in the nation competing out of the west region. It makes it a competitive battle for that third and final spot. To do this three years in a row shows our tenacity as a group and will serve as a great springboard going into Division I.”
GCU, fresh off a third place finish at the PacWest Championships, will meet Hawai’i Pacific for the first time this season. The Sea Warriors are 18-2 and finished second at the conference tournament.
“We will have our work cut out for us in playing Hawai’i Pacific,” added Prudhomme. “It is our first time seeing them this season and we are ready to give them everything we have and hopefully gain a spot in the Round of 16 in Surprise, Ariz.”
The Antelopes, who are 12-5 overall, will be led by 16
th-ranked
Priscilla Annoual. She has gone 9-5 this season and has three wins over nationally ranked opponents.
Lana Macukat enters the tournament with a team best 11 wins and is 7-3 in her last 10 matches. Teammate
Frederique Van de Velde has amassed 10 wins this season, with eight coming in the No. 5 singles slot.
The duo of Annoual and
Justine Majan are currently ranked 16
th in the nation for doubles and are 9-7 this season. Macukat has paired with
Katharina Mittag to go 11-4 this year.
BYU-Hawai’i secured the west region’s top selection and has received a bye into the Round of 16.
