The 13
th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team saw their 2013 campaign come to an end with a 5-1 loss to third-ranked Hawai’i Pacific in the opening round of the NCAA Championships today in Manoa, Hawai’i.
The Antelopes finish with a record of 12-6, while HPU improved to 19-2 and advanced to the Round of 16 that will be contested in Surprise, Ariz. May 8-11.
GCU dropped all three doubles matches, but not before putting up a battle in the No. 1 and 2 pairings. 16
th-ranked
Priscilla Annoual and
Justine Majan fell 8-6 in the top spot, while
Katharina Mittag and
Lana Macukat dropped the No. 2 doubles match by the same score.
16
th-ranked Annoual picked up the lone Antelope point of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 upset win over 12
th-ranked Ielyzaveta Rybakova. She closes out the season with a 10-5 record, including four wins over nationally ranked opponents.
“The girls played a great match today, giving HPU the toughest match in our meetings over the past three years,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “Unfortunately we let it slip away in the doubles. We fought all of the way through to the end, but we needed one or two of those points to have a chance. We had a great win by Priscilla in the No. 1 singles and were in it on many of the singles courts. Hats off to HPU, but I am very proud of how we competed. With only two teams getting to the final 16 from the west, it is tough. We will use these experiences as we make the move into Division I.”
The match marked the end of the collegiate careers for two GCU seniors, Mittag and
Kaila Knopf. Mittag recorded six singles win this season and teamed with Macukat to go 11-6 in doubles. Knopf was 2-1 in singles matches and posted five doubles victories.
