Eetu Karvonen closed out his GCU swimming career with arguably his best effort, capturing the 200 breaststroke in record fashion tonight at the NCAA Swimming Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Karvonen got out quickly in the 200 breast and used a strong finish to smash the D-II record with a time of 1:54.57. It was his fifth NCAA title winning swim over the past two years, four of which were in individual events.
The GCU men climbed back up on the podium this year in their final season in D-II, taking fourth with 336 points. Drury won the team competition with 546 points. It was the Antelopes’ second fourth-place finish in the past three seasons.
The Grand Canyon women completed the championships in 11
th, while Drury took the team title.
Inha Kotsur put the finishing touches on her highly successful meet by placing seventh in the 1650 free with a 16:52.35. She earned All-American honors in three distance events over the four days.
The women’s 400 free relay team of
Catherine Polito,
Samantha Magnani,
Stacey Rudman and
Mychala Lynch capped off their meet by finishing fifth (3:25.32). The event was last for Lynch who completes her time at GCU as a two-time NCAA champion.
The men’s 400 free relay squad of
Tom Wahlers,
Tanner Brotherton,
Kyle Shores and
Michael Branning also took fifth in the night’s final event, posting a 2:57.12.
