Grand Canyon opened its wrestling season Saturday with one champion and three runner-up finishes at the Colorado Mesa Open in Grand Junction, Colo.
A Division II All-American in 2013,
Mike Hamel won the 149-class. He won four matches, two by decision, one by technical fall and another by major decision.
"He wrestled really tough," said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. "He wrestled smart the whole tournament."
Hamel out-pointed his opponents 45-10.

"It was a decent job overall," added LaHaye. "Gaun had a tough match with a D-II All-American in the semifinals and stuck right with him. It was good for all of these guys to get experience.
"It was a good effort overall and when you're this young the main thing is to get them mat time."
GCU wrestles its first Division I duals Friday at Bakersfield, taking on the host Roadrunners and Appalachian State.
