Sixth-ranked Grand Canyon won all four of its matches at the Grand Canyon University Duals at GCU Arena Saturday.
Ten teams participated in the event, including No. 3 St. Cloud State and No. 14 Colorado Mesa.
GCU picked up two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victories, beating Chadron State 26-15 and Colorado School of Mines 26-13. The Antelopes came from behind to earn a 22-19 victory over Minnesota State Moorhead and wrapped up the day with a 45-6 win over Minot State.
“We’ve got to be more consistent as a group,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “We’ve got to get all 10 of our guys on the same page.”
The Antelopes trailed 16-6 midway through the match against MSU Moorhead, but rallied back with big wins from
Juan Carlos Maynes (165),
Brett Sanchez (184),
Marcus Haughian (184/197) and
Tyrell Fortune (285).
“Everything that could go against us did and we found a way to pull it out,” said LaHaye. “It really shows some character as a group to pull it out.”
In the match, GCU lost two one-point decisions and lost what looked to be at least a nine-point swing when 2012 All-American
Bobby Ward had to withdraw due to injury.
Fortune went 3-0 on the day with three pins, all in the first period. Defending 125-class national champion
Kyle McCrite went 4-0 on the day with two wins by decisions and two forfeits. Wrestling for the first time in over a year, University of Wyoming transfer
Mike Hamel went 3-1 at 141.
Haughian, a redshirt freshman, went 2-0.
Peter Anguiano won impressively, 20-5, in his lone match.
Martin Fabbian went 2-1 at 174. Sanchez and 133-pounder
Lino Estrada, who was wrestling for the first time this season, went 2-2 on the day.
Ryan Miller won his lone match at 165.
Aurel Dan had a victory by forfeit and
Austen Moore had one win at 157.
“We saw some good things and some bad things,” added LaHaye on his team’s day.
Other teams participating Saturday included, California Baptist, Simon Fraser and Western State.
Antelopes prepare for the National Wrestling Coaches Association Duals in Springfield, Ill., Jan. 12-13.
