The No. 19 Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team knocked off top-ranked Fort Lewis tonight, 3-2, on the GCU Soccer Field. With the win, the Antelopes improved to 3-0-0 on the season, while the Skyhawks suffered their first loss (2-1-0).
The ‘Lopes last defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the country when they won, 2-1, against the defending national champions Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2009.
“There is a reason why Fort Lewis is ranked No. 1 in the country,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “I am so proud of our players for the win tonight. I thought we played very, very well. I can’t say enough for our guys. It was unbelievable what they demonstrated tonight.”
The game saw some heated moments, as 10 yellow cards were assessed, all of which came in the second half.
GCU outshot Fort Lewis 9-4 in the first half and had three shots on goal. The tables turned as the Skyhawks had 13 shots in the second 45, compared with nine for the ‘Lopes.
The game was tightly contested in the first half before the Skyhawks broke through with a goal in the 36
th minute. The ‘Lopes answered with a goal of their own when
Saeed Robinson netted the equalizer with just under 30 seconds remaining in the half. Robinson scored off a rebound as
Oshane Brown was credited with the assist.
The ‘Lopes carried that momentum into the second half, scoring again when Robinson crossed to
Stipe-Darko Medic for the score from just in front of the goal in the 46
th minute. GCU upped their advantage in the 72
nd minute with a perfectly struck free kick by
Zoran Nincevic.
The Skyhawks pulled within one goal when they successfully converted a header in the 83
rd minute. The Skyhawks took one more shot before the final buzzer rang and the ‘Lopes secured the win.
“Fort Lewis is an incredible team and they have some great players and a great coaching staff,” Draksin said. “I am proud of our guys and my coaching staff. We will enjoy this tonight.”
GCU will next be in action when they take on Seattle Pacific on Monday at 7 p.m. in Seattle, Wash.
“We need to get back to it and get our energy up for Monday,” added Draksin. “Tomorrow, we get ready for Seattle Pacific).
